The 2024 Australian Marmalade Awards were held in the charming town of Birregurra, just a hope skip and a jump west of Melbourne, showcasing a delightful celebration of citrus and culinary creativity. The event kicked off with an engaging Citrus Masterclass presented by Ian Tolley OAM, our esteemed patron of the awards both here and the Dalemain World Marmalade Awards in the UK. This informative session took place at the Birregurra Hall, where attendees had the opportunity to delve into the world of citrus cultivation. Ian's comprehensive presentation covered a wide array of topics, offering valuable insights and practical tips for growing healthy citrus trees. Participants left armed with knowledge that would undoubtedly enhance their horticultural journeys.
The awards ceremony took place the following day at the picturesque historic Railway Station. The atmosphere was vibrant as award winners gathered to celebrate the achievements of marmalade makers from all over Australia. Ian Tolley, alongside food journalist, broadcaster, and storyteller Wendy Hargreaves, presented the awards with enthusiasm and recognition for the hard work of all participants.
The competition was fierce this year! Three CWA judges (Anna-Marie Primmer, Alison Hull & Anne Marsden), and famed Brae Restaurant Head Chef Jason White, along with Restaurant Manager Alex Casey had the task of picking the winners.
The success of the awards was made possible through the contributions of all who entered, demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting worthy causes. This year, the awards helped raise funds for three organisations: the Birregurra Community Health Centre, Colac Area Health Foundation, and the Australian Royal Flying Doctors.
Sponsorship from Beerenberg, renowned maker of fine preserves based in Hahndorf SA, played a significant role in the event's success. The local committee, led by Belinda Stewart, along with treasurer Georgie Seebeck, Ami Hillege, Kylie Edwards and Jill Martin, worked collaboratively to ensure the event's success.
The Australian Marmalade Awards are proudly supported by the UK-based Dalemain World Marmalade Awards, founded by Jane Hasell-McCosh at the Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens in Cumbria. The Birregurra Committee expressed sincere gratitude for the guidance and support received in establishing the Australian Marmalade Awards in Birregurra, which have quickly become a new institution in the region.
This year, the competition saw over 300 entries, a testament to the growing interest in marmalade-making and the dedication of local home cooks and artisans in Australia. As the awards concluded, excitement filled the air for what next year will bring, with hopes for even more entries and innovations. Who knew that marmalade could inspire such passion and community engagement? The event celebrated the craft of marmalade-making while bringing participants together, building connections that will help it flourish for years to come.
